aceartinc., 290 McDermot

Open City Cinema & aceartinc. present the animated works of Jessica MacCormack and the Winnipeg launch of her illustrated book The See.
Artist Jessica MacCormack in attendance!

MacCormack dramatizes the kinds of hallucinations that one’s mind is forced to create when one is unable to face – or even conceive of – an experienced trauma. This state of daydreaming is more akin to a nightmare: visual manifestations of past abuses and indignities that can’t show their real forms can only shift in and out of legibility.

Jessica MacCormack’s recent works integrate animation, video, painting and collage in social interventions and community productions that explore issues of criminalization, HIV/AIDS, racism, transphobia, sexual assault and mental health.

The Laramie Project, by Moisés Kaufman and The Tectonic Theater Company, was written following the savage beating of a gay college student, Matthew Shepard, on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. It chronicles the community’s effort to redefine itself following Matthew’s death, and portrays the residents dealing with their anger, their own misgivings, and the onslaught of media scrutiny that broadly labeled the community as intolerant.

This is a timely piece in light of recent headlines from Russia and Uganda to Arizona.
In rural Manitoba recent events have exposed concerns about intolerance toward the LGBT community. The closure of a restaurant in Morris and a Steinbach high school student’s fight with the school board to start a Gay-Straight Alliance have drawn national attention.

However, once the media glare fades away, these communities are left to resolve the lingering divisions among the residents on their own.
