Don’t Be So Gay!: Queers, Bullying, and Making Schools Safe

Drawing on interviews with queer youth and their allies, Short concludes that current legislation is more responsive than proactive. Moreover, cultural influences and peer pressure may be more powerful. Exploring how students’ own experiences and definitions of safety might translate into policy reform, this book offers a fresh perspective.

Donn Short is an assistant professor of law at Robson Hall Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba and the founding editor of the Canadian Journal of Human Rights.

Our Native Song: Essays on Music, presented as part of our Meet the Composer series

These essays explore the idea that all music, even European classical music, is folk music. The author compares countries with successful musical legacies to countries, like Canada, who are only just emerging with a musical voice of their own.

Glenn Buhr is a composer, music curator/producer, band leader, pianist/guitarist and song-writer. In the mid-1980’s the Toronto and Montreal Symphony Orchestras first championed his works, and in the mid-90’s he was front man of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s New Music Festival. He has performed in concert halls, clubs, folk and jazz festivals all across Canada. He has also composed scores for film and theatre, and has collaborated on several ballet and contemporary dance projects.
