The Winnipeg Art Gallery is considered one of the finest examples of Modernist architecture in the country. However, there are many Modernist buildings in Winnipeg.
2012 marks the anniversary of two important late-modernist buildings in Winnipeg: The Winnipeg Art Gallery, designed by Gustavo da Roza (Number Ten Architecture Group), and the University of Winnipeg’s signature building, Centennial Hall, designed by Lewis Morse (Moody, Moore and Partners).
The concept of “modernist heritage” is becoming more important. This tour will examine the state of preservation of Winnipeg’s modern buildings, situating the Winnipeg Art Gallery building in its architectural context and look at the role architecture has played in rejuvenating Winnipeg’s downtown since the 1970s.
Serena Keshavjee, associate professor at the University of Winnipeg, teaches European art and architecture. She edited a book on Winnipeg Modernist Architecture in 2006.
