Rachel Thompson & Kerry Ryan

Tuesday April 19, 8:00 pm
Grant Park in Prairie Ink Restaurant

Galaxy, the poetry winner at SFU’s Writers Studio’s First Book Competition, is the debut collection of poems from Rachel Thompson that traverses the orbit of a wounded family, love that is queer and conventional, and “emotional biography” where the facts are fabricated but the feelings are authentic.

Rachel Thompson grew up in Dauphin, Manitoba, located at the foot of Riding Mountain National Park. She went to the University of Winnipeg, majoring in English and International Development Studies. After moving to Vancouver in the early 2000s, she took part in the award-winning Writer’s Studio program at Simon Fraser University. She completed Galaxy at the Banff Centre for the Arts Wired Writers program. Her poetry has appeared in journals in Canada and abroad.

Rachel will be joined by fellow Anvil Press poet Kerry Ryan. A Winnipeg-based poet whose work has been published in literary journals across the country, her first collection, The Sleeping Life, was nominated for the Aqua Books Lansdowne Prize for Poetry in 2009. Her second collection Vs. was published last fall and she is currently nominated for The John Hirsch Award for Most Promising Manitoba Writer at the 2010 Manitoba Book Awards.
