"Northern First Nations, Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO), and the Future"

Grand Chief Sheila North Wilson has been Grand Chief of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) since 2015. She was formerly a reporter with CTV Winnipeg, a RTNDA award winner and Gemini nominee. Wilson has worked as a journalist for CBC, as an entrepreneur, a Cree translator and a radio personality. She grew up in Bunibonibee Cree Nation (Oxford House), has two children, is married and lives in Winnipeg.

Aboriginal Youth Opportunities & Winnipeg's Future

Jenna Wirch, an Anishinaabe activist and youth worker from the North End, is an advocate for her community. She is actively involved in Aboriginal Youth Opportunities and the revitalization of the North End. Jenna is currently a youth care leader at NdinaweMaaganag Endaawaad 24/7 drop in center.

Michael Redhead Champagne has spent nearly two decades speaking out and leading. Accolades for his work include the 2016 Canadian Red Cross Young Humanitarian of the Year and in TIME Magazine as a Next Generation Leader. Michael has served as president of North End Community Renewal Corporation, a board member for the Circle of Life Thunderbird House and is serving on the board for Marymound Inc. 

AYO! (Aboriginal Youth Opportunities) is a youth movement from Winnipeg's North End who use relationships with organizations, media partners and businesses in order to empower, enrich, and engage issues throughout Winnipeg.

In conjunction with the imagineNATIVE Festival and Urban Shaman Gallery, Cinematheque presents The Embargo Collective II – five short films by Canadian Indigenous women. Each director created a film under restrictions imposed by their peers in order to push them into new creative territory.

Roberta / Directed by Caroline Monnet, French with English subtitles 
Housewife and grandmother Roberta, struggling to fit into a conformist society, turns to amphetamines and booze to cure her boredom.

Skyworld / Directed by Zoe Leigh Hopkins, English and Mohawk with English subtitles 
A broken-hearted woman moves home to rebuild her life and give her young son roots through language and family.

Bihttoš / Directed by Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, English and Sami with English subtitles 
A documentary that explores the complex relationship between a father and a daughter. 

Intemperance / Directed by Lisa Jackson - In 1850, George Copway published a history of his nation, the Ojibway. A morally complex story of his people living in changing times.

Aviliaq (Entwined) / Directed by Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, Inukitut with English subtitles 
Set in a 1950’s Inuit community, Aviliaq tells the story of two Inuit lesbians struggling to stay together in a new world run by outsiders.

Carnaval is one of the biggest parties in the world, and we want to bring the celebration to Winnipeg for the first time!

Entertainment will include a performance by Brazilian-Canadian songwriter and Latin rhythmist Marco Castillo, Capoeira and drum performances from Viva Brasil, and an interactive salsa/samba experience by Salsa Explosion Dance Company! Dj David Gomez will be spinning the best Latin music, hip hop, R&B and dancehall all night long!

This year’s race will take us on a different route, still some nice twists and turns on the inner section. This is an Iron Paws sanctioned race, so you can collect points for volunteering to help and running the race.

After watching the episode together as a group we will over-analyze the episode and let it play with our life, faith, and philosophy.

If you're not a master of one the elements that's ok. We pride ourselves on doing a fairly good job of explaining anything that needs to be explained - so you can enjoy the fandom regardless of familiarity.

Artists will set minimum bids on their work $50 and up. Please consider donating artwork. You don’t have to be a MAWA member and we welcome pieces by artists of all genders, in all media. Please email info@mawa.ca and let us know you will be contributing. Then fill out an artist contract on our website and drop it off with your work. MAWA accepts donations:

Understanding Trauma at its Heart: A day with Gabor Maté

Dr. Maté will identify strategies to prevent caregiver stress and compassion fatigue, and how to achieve a healthier work/life balance to create greater self-awareness and self-compassion, which in turn are major tools in recovery and healing. 
He will also provide an understanding of the linkages of child diagnosis, adult mental illness, addiction, and adverse childhood experiences.
